Even so, the sudden loss of nuclear availability combined with weak wind output sent shockwaves through the market. French day-ahead power contracts surged to 154.50 euros per megawatt-hour, hitting the highest mark seen since June.

The pain doesn't stop at the French border. France usually acts as the battery of Western Europe, pumping steady baseload electricity into neighboring grids like Britain, Germany, and Italy. While France remains a net exporter, average scheduled exports dropped roughly 20% compared to July. Deprived of cheap French nuclear supply, neighboring nations have been forced to spin up expensive, carbon-heavy coal and gas plants to keep their own lights on.

Broader Structural Realities

Total unavailable nuclear capacity on Friday sits at a staggering 27.7 gigawatts. That figure includes the heat-driven cuts alongside routine summer maintenance, ongoing technical snags, and fuel conservation efforts. It marks the lowest level of nuclear availability since August 2023.

Critics often point to these recurring summer shutdowns as proof that nuclear power cannot cope with a warming planet. Supporters counter that despite the environmental restrictions, the fleet still functions as the foundational backbone of the grid, keeping exports flowing when other generation types fail.

The reality sits squarely in the middle. Nuclear power remains remarkably efficient, but its reliance on vast quantities of cold surface water creates a glaring operational bottleneck. As summer heatwaves grow longer and more intense across Europe, engineering workarounds or retrofitting closed-loop cooling towers will shift from expensive options to absolute necessities.
