The Real Cost of Political Theater

Why do governments keep doing this? Because constituents understand big tanks. Tanks are visible. Tanks make for great drone footage on the evening news.

Announcing a three billion dollar infrastructure project for steel silos lets a minister look strong on national television. Announcing a complex, unglamorous overhaul of bureaucratic import licensing, grid-level load shedding optimization, and localized renewable microgrids does not play well on a thirty-second soundbite.

We are subsidizing bad policy with balance sheet capital.

If India or South Africa want genuine energy security, they should liquidate a significant portion of those physical stockpiles and redirect that capital into hyper-localized energy storage, smart-grid automation, and frictionless import logistics. Flexibility beats hoarding every single time.

Stop building monuments to paranoia. Sell the tanks. Fix the pipes.
