Forget what you've heard about needing to book a flight to Spain or Iceland to catch the action. While those places get the total blackout, a 90-plus percent occlusion right from your local park or coastline is a big deal. Throw in the fact that the peak coincides with the opening hours of the annual Perseid meteor shower later that night, and you are looking at one hell of a busy evening for the sky.

Here is what you actually need to know about the 2026 solar eclipse, when to look up, and how to keep your eyesight intact while doing it.

When and Where to Catch the 2026 Eclipse in the UK

Timing is everything. The event kicks off shortly after 6:10 PM BST, hits its maximum coverage right around 7:10 PM to 7:16 PM, and wraps up just before 8:10 PM. Because it happens late in the afternoon, the sun will sit low on the west-northwest horizon.

Your biggest enemy isn't necessarily cloud cover—though British weather is famously uncooperative—it's your local horizon. You need an unobstructed view towards the west. Buildings and dense woodlands will ruin your view instantly.

Geographic location shifts your percentage of coverage. The further south-west you travel, the better the show:

  • The Isles of Scilly and West Cornwall: Leading the pack with up to 96% coverage. Places like Land's End and Sennen Cove offer prime coastal viewing.
  • Wales and South-West England: Pembrokeshire and Cardiff sit comfortably around 93% to 94% coverage.

How to Protect Your Eyes

Let's clear this up immediately. Regular sunglasses do nothing. Kitchen foil does nothing. Smoked glass is a fast track to emergency eye care. Looking directly at a partially eclipsed sun without certified protection can burn your retina permanently, and because the retina lacks pain receptors, you won't even feel it happening until it is too late.

If you want to look at the sun directly, you need proper eclipse glasses bearing the international safety standard code ISO 12312-2 (or ISO 12312-2:2015).
